67 Braddock - Swissvale (bus)

Route 67 Braddock - Swissvale bus route came into PAT's route structure from the former streetcar route 67 Rankin - Braddock. While the route was undergoing the conversion from rail to bus, weekend bus substitution was done and the buses kept the same route number as the streetcars to help avoid confusing the public. Once the conversion was completed, the 67 designation was retired and the route placed into the PAT corridor numbering system.

Garages assigned to the 67:

Homewood Garage - 09/04/66 - 01/28/67

Destination Signs:

Route ran with window cards and destination signs.

Above are representative of what you would have seen for the route on split sign buses for inbound and outbound. The 67 signs (curb side) were made by PAT and spliced into the existing sign rolls.

Routing:

Inbound routing - 9th at Talbot via Talbot, Kenmawr, Braddock, Ramp, 2nd, Hawkins, 5th, Harriet, Miller, Monongahela, Braddock, Forbes Avenue, South Craig Street, Fifth Avenue, Seneca, Forbes Avenue, Stanwix Street to 4th Avenue.

Outbound routing - Stanwix Street at 4th Avenue via 4th Avenue, Ross, Forbes Avenue, Gist, Fifth Avenue, South Craig Street, Forbes Avenue, Braddock, Monongahela, Miller, Harriet, 5th, Hawkins, 2nd, Ramp, Braddock, Kenmawr, Talbot, 11th, Washington, 9th to Talbot.

Alternate inbound routing - No change

Alternate outbound routing - Outbound routing - Stanwix Street at 4th Avenue via 4th Avenue, Ross, Forbes Avenue, Gist, Fifth Avenue, South Craig Street, Forbes Avenue, Braddock, Monongahela, Miller, Harriet, 5th, Hawkins, 2nd, Ramp, Braddock, Kenmawr, Talbot, 11th, Pine, 13th to Talbot.

A one way trip on the regular routing took approximately 46 minutes.

Route Highlights:

  • Started 09/04/66 as a weekend rail replacement route.

  • Ended 01/28/67 after full conversion of route to bus and route redesignated.

  • The 67 bus route ran weekends only. Holiday service was provided by trolley.

  • The route mirrored the the streetcar route except at the very end of the route where it looped the block instead of using the trolley loop. Also there was a very small deviation at the end of the line that looped the block in the opposite direction.

  • The 67 was referred to as the 67 Rankin - Braddock on schedules but 67 Braddock - Swissvale on destination signs.

Schedules (Known PAT issued schedules are listed):

The 67 had 1 distinct schedule type issued under folder PH-5 and were a plain white, 4 panel fold out schedule. The 67 shared a schedule with the 61C McKeesport - Homestead and the 64 East Pittsburgh.

PH-5F - 09/04/66 - Corrected to 09/07/66 and then reprinted without correction *

Route Disposition:

The 67 bus route was renumbered to the 61B Braddock - Swissvale after the conversion from rail to bus was complete on 01/28/67. The 61B began operations on 01/29/67.

We will have the history of the 67 trolley line and the 61B bus route up at a later date.
